Where I stayed
Had Spanish classes in the morning today, two new students – Marc from Zurich and Carin from New York. New teacher called Vivian. Managed to speak quite a lot of Spanish today.
After classes I spoke to Steph and then we hired some Kayaks and paddled out to the island. Went with Terje, Snow, Lara and Jasmin. It didn't take too long to get there but a storm started as we arrived. From Tamarindo it looked like a nice sandy beached island but it was actually covered in hundreds of giant white shells and some volcanic rock that some huge birds and thousands of massive crabs were living on. Had a sandwich and had to turn back because the storm was building. When we got back to shore me and Terje tried kayak surfing, lots of fun but lots of bruises to show for it.
Went on a school arranged trip to see the sunset from a hilltop, didn’t see much of the sunset because of some trees
Tuesday 8th July
Terje and Snow’s last day in Tamarindo. Spent most of it trying to use Terje’s surfboard and then helped them choose some presents for their host family.
Went to a bar on top of a four storey building which had great views of the bay and the sunset. Met some Canadians, Kiwis and some more Brits. Every bar in Tamarindo has happy hour pretty much all day. Later on I met Terje and Snow at a hostel and met the Canadians and Kiwis from earlier and some guys from Orange County, one of them a spitting image of Jack Black.
Went to another happy hour bar and then to La Barra before getting a pineapple burger. Said goodbye to the Norwegians.
Wednesday 9th July
The sun was out, for a change, managed to sunbathe a bit and get rid of some of the pastiness
One of my neighbours, Lara, came round in the evening to go play football in Santa Rosa with Carina and Jenifer in my family. After a cramped bus ride full of large women it was a great experience seeing the Ticos and Ticas playing football. The guys team was really good, and so were some of the girls, but some were just having a laugh and were terrible.
Had rice, beans and tentacles of some sort for dinner. Meant to go out as Vincent (tequila mad guy from Dallas) was leaving, but a massive storm came in and killed that idea.
Thursday 10th July
Missed the bus as went to find Jasmin who hadn’t turned up. Tried to get a public bus but it was full. Walked for 45 minutes before a taxi picked us up, and still charged us the price from Villareal.
Spoke to Mum and Steph on Skype
Friday 11th July
Last day of school in the morning. Got a certificate and had to think up a speech in Spanish – don’t think it was great. Went shopping for presents for my family as I was leaving Villareal soon. As there was a lot of them I bought lots of presents from the supermarket. Surprisingly they had never heard of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, parma ham, shortbread or guess who (Quien soy). They were all very chuffed with the presents and I was very popular, and had to play a lot of Quien soy. We planned to go out in Tamarindo in the evening but a big rainstorm came in and everyone in Villareal stayed in.
Saturday 12th July
We went on a snorkelling trip on an all you can drink catamaran. Saw a few fish but it was mainly nice being on the boat. Saw a turtle and a flying fish
When we got back to the beach Alonso had just returned from a fishing trip and we gave him a lift to shore. Went to Babylon in the evening where there was a live reggae band. There was also a skateboard halfpipe in the middle of the club. Saw the Canadian guys in there.
Sunday 13th July
Went to Playa Conchel at lunch time. Massive rainstorm. Really cool beach with soft shells. Very strange waves that roll you over lots when you are near the shore. Saw Wes in the shop. Also saw the legendary rodeo pitch.
In the evening Jasmin cooked a traditional Austrian meal for everyone in Villareal. Meat and mashed potato with a fried egg on top.
