Sao Paulo must be one of the worst cities to arrive in on your own, on your first time in South America! It’s massive and hectic and I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing or where I was staying, I had a hostel name but no address. Good start!
But the flight in was good, it seemed to go really quickly and the seats on TAM were really easy to sleep in. I watched Inception on a 5inch screen which probably didn’t do it justice.
Arriving at Guarahlos Airport I spent the first 45 minutes searching for an internet café to find the address of where I was going to stay. That done, I headed to look for a bus to the centre, this turned out to be pretty easy and I started to talking to a Brazilian biology graduate who had just been to Buenos Aires, he was really helpful and recommended me a Hostel and showed me how to use the Metro system. Simeo (his name) also then offered to take me in a taxi to my hostel as he lived nearby, I gladly accepted and about 15 minutes later was there, he wouldn’t even accept any money for the fare. Paulistas (natives) are nice.
I got to the Hostel which was locked down like a fortress and they had no recollection of my reservation and we’re full! But after a bit of talking, mostly them talking at me in Portuguese and me smiling, I was given a bed. I seemed to be the only English speaker at the hostel, so it wasn’t much fun.
The next morning I went for a (short) look around Sao Paulo before my connecting flight to Buenos Aires, I haven’t showed in almost 2 days now because they wouldn’t let me pick up my luggage at Sao Paulo as it’s going straight to Buenos Aires (I hope)! Sao Paulo isn’t pretty but it was quite interesting for a few hours, a strange girl stopped me in the street and asked me to pray for her and then talked at me in Portuguese for 5 minutes (oh well), and the Japanese market looked pretty good. Heading back to the cheap bus (I thought) I found my way with time to spare only to find it was the expensive bus 30R instead of the 3R I paid the other way. Not happy, but at the airport on-time and waiting for my Qatar Airways flight which I have high hopes for as the Gulf airlines are generally well regarded.
Looking forward to meeting Chazz tonight, and also I think it’s about time I tried to learn some Spanish and a little Portuguese as it would make life a lot easier.
