Amigos Nuevos
Friday (Feb 9th, 2007) we went to the roman ruins of Italica, situated just outside of Sevilla, Spain. Founded in 206 BC by Scipio Africanus, it was one of the earliest Roman cities in Hispania. Very important in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, the cities demise came from the changing course of the Rio Guadalquivir, which used to flow right next to it but now has shifted significantly toward the city center of Sevilla. We lucked out with the weather, and the site was very interesting - the amphitheater was especially intriguing. However, due to use of the site as a stone quarry over the years, little remains of the city's temples or baths - mostly just rubble. We had fun climbing up the amphitheater and snacking on bocadillos by the old Roman baths.
My roommate from CU Boulder David came with his program to Sevilla that weekend (Feb 9th-11th, 2007) and we went out on the town. As far as nightlife - Sevilla has plenty to offer.
Pure Class
We started the night with some "botellon" next to the river. A spanish word, "botellon" pretty much translates to pre-gaming.
La Plaza de Espana
After enjoying the night lights on the river for a bit we dived over to El Duende, our hangout in Triana. The owner of the bar has taken a liking to us, and gets us into clubs gratis! Anyways, we ran into a beer pong party there - so clearly we participated! Watch out, its taking over the world - although they don't use SOLO cups here! We tried to go to a few discos - but Dave and friends hadn't brought nice enough clothes, and we couldn't get in without being charged rediculous cover charges of over 20 euro. So, the night ended up back in the bars - but was still a great time. The next day Dave went by Plaza de Espana and the Park de Maria Luisa before heading back to Alicante - a good visit! A few other night shots are in there too..
