We started the day by going to The Pearl which is a cafe/restaurant/museum on top of hot water cylinders for city use. Really clever place. We visited the Saga Museum (history of Vikings in Iceland), which is located inside the one cylinder that is not in use. IIt just happened the guy who created the museum was working there and was extremely friendly to us... Then again EVERYONE here is. He also got us a taxi, which took all of 2 mins to get there. I love this small city feel here even though the population is around 200,000.
We then went to the main Lutheran church in Iceland
For dinner we stopped at the Bæjarins beztu hot dog stand that The Guardian raved was 'the best in Europe'.
With the sun still up at 1045pm cat and I wondered out to grab a drink. We drank a few at the Big Labowski and came out to what looks like a sunset at 1245am. So weird. Awesome batender, great night.
Day 1 summary:
The cold and the wind were brutal at times but the people have been nothing but warming. Jesus, that was cheesy as hell, but I couldn't resist. So far definitely the nicest people I have ever met--granted its only day one, but if what I hear/read is true, that will be the case the rest of the trip. Tomorrow we start driving the ring road.
