The stretch from the peruan border to the north, the andes (san pedro) to the east and port of caldera to the south
comprises the Atacama desert. (roughly 500km long)

Well it was a bit disapointing to drive it. Its not like the sahara.

From san pedro to antofagasta and south, its pretty much gray dust.  Pretty boring.
towards the south, about 100km north of caldera it gets sandy and more desert like.

In general, i realize, that all the west coast of south america is desert like or dry dusty, from ecuador down to southern chile.

Friends told me that the north of Argentina is beautiful.I was also in doubt where to go but opted for Chile.
