Today we took a walking tour of Barcelona.

Then we had a look at the Picasso Museum, which is a chronological look at Picasso's paintings, from when he was about 12 until old age.

It was fascinating to see the evolution of his painting, from realism in his youth to his own style of decided non-realism as he got older.

Then we took the subway to another part of town, to see some buildings by the architect Gaudi.

His buildings look as if they are alternatively plants or animals or birthday cakes.  They look as if they grew there - or as if they are melting.  Gaudi did not do any straight lines.

I remember construction being about keeping things plumb and level.  I can imagine contractors cursing Gaudi as they tried to execute his creations.  "Curse you Mr. Gaudi for your balcony rails shaped like whale jawbones.  Curse you for your non-square window frames and lotus-shaped balconies!  How is a guy supposed to build this stuff?"  Though Gaudi may be revered in the art world, I am sure that his name lives in infamy amoung the brick layers and carpenters of Barcelona.
