Where I stayed
The state of Oaxaca marks the break between North American central Mexico and Central America. Here the two chains of the Sierra Madre converge, to run on as a single range, through the country's narrowest point, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, right into South America and the Andes. The frequently barren landscapes of northern Mexico are left behind, replaced by thickly forested hillsides, or in low-lying areas by swamp and jungle.
The relaxed city of Oaxaca itself is the prime destination, close enough to Mexico City and the mainstream to attract large numbers of tourists to its fine crafts stores, markets and seemingly constant fiestas, cobbled, gallery-lined walkways, sophisiticated restaurants and nearby indigenous villages and ancient ruins. Here you can see one of the region's - and the whole of Iberian America's - most magnificent Baroque churches, Santo Domingo, which fuses Spanish and native influences to spectacular effect
I stay in Mekalito hostel here which has a pool and meet some nice people.
We go out salsa dancing on the first night and i stand on a few toes. I really need to get lessons soon. In the bar they sell big dispensers on beer with a huge block of ice in the middle to keep it cool. so you never have to leave your seat to get cold beer. Unfortunately i dont have any pictures as i didnt bring out my camera that night.
Next day i leave for Puerto Escondido. Top 5 surf spots in the world.
A little about PE
The journey to PUERTO ESCONDIDO ("Hidden Port") from Oaxaca is dramatic, passing through mountainous pine forests and descending into lush tropical lowlands. To the south, the air pushed in from the sea meets the air in the tropical forest, condenses and regularly rises in impressive, cold gusts up the mountainside.
Everything revolves around surfing and being outdoors: you can get your hair cut while watching the surfers on the boards, or watch a video of the morning's action in one of the hotels
I travel here with Lee (eng) and Amy (NZ) and stay at a lovely place called Pepes Cabanas with great views over the beaches and a much needed breeze as its sweltering here.
Our first night is great after an all you can eat fish buffet until we decide to go on the beach for a joint at 3am. it is said by all the travel books that you should never go to the beach after dark but with 2 for 1 cocktails all night then all common sense goes out the window.
After sitting down for 5 mins we are surrounded by cops. They see us smoking a joint and arrest 2 of us. I was a lucky one and was completely ignored as it was only the people who were skinning up that got arrested.
So all of us go to the jail in support of our friends as we were all guilty.
We arrive at the jail and usually all you do is pay the local cops $30 each and away you go but for some reason they wanted to keep the boys in overnight
When we initially arrived at the jail we were surprised to see the Lasse was already in one jail cell with his girlfriend handcuffed to a chair in the station itself. it was so funny. His girlfriend had decided to go skinny dipping and Lasse was holding her clothes for her while she was in the sea. When the cops came they caught him with her bra in his pocket. This was reason enough to arrest both of them.
The jails were disgusting. they smelt of piss and sh1t and no one could sit down as the floor was full of ants and lice.
Eventually Él Jefe´ (the boss) came in the moring and we all paid $30 each to free the Puerto 4.
Tired we all went to bed for the day.
The next day i rented a body board for the day and tried to act cool in the huge waves. PE is in the top 3 surf spots in the world and some of the surfers and body boarders were amazing.
I managed to catch 3 or 4 waves all day and wiped out on all of them. i also wiped all my suncream off and got burnt.
Jasper (danish) bought a brand new board here in PE and broke it in 2 mins in the huge surf. He was truely pissed off.
