We hop on the local bus to take us to the city centre.
I have organised to met a girl named Ale through Couchsurfing.com here in Zacatecas.
I meet her for coffee the following day and she shows me around her city.
Zacatecas is an elegant colonial city in central Mexico. In addition to it's fine colonial buildings, constructed of pink sandstone, it maintains a great partying tradition called "Callejoneadas"
This is an interesting way to tour the city! Around 8pm on weekends, a group of musicians, dressed in old Spanish costumes, gather in a square, and start to play. A crowd starts to form around the musicians. The organisers hand out small cups made out of clay, and which have a long ribbon attached to the handle. You hang these cups around your neck, and somebody fills them up with tequila.
When the crowd is large enough, the musicians take off, walking around the city centre, up and down the dozens of alleyways. The crowd follow the musicians, drinking, dancing and singing along the way. The musicians occasionally stop in squares so that people can catch up, refill their drinks, and dance like crazy. It's such a great and unique party.
that night we trail behind the crowd and go to a local Cantina to have some more Mexican beers.
The Cantina is filled with locals and a two piece playing traditional Mexican songs.
I had $2 in the dukebox and i think ´More than words´ by Extreme was about to come on when they started
After the Cantina, we decide to check out a unusual disco, which has been built inside a disused silver mine.It is meant to be amazing but as the lads and the girls were wearing flip flops we were refused entry.
Instead we try another bar which is full so we settle for the only place that is left....a Gay caberet bar.
inside is what looks like the Mexican verison on Lily Savage. The bar is full of men kissing and groping and all laughing at this Man/woman tell jokes.
the bar is 2 for 1 beers so we sit down and enjoy the night.
The next day i wander around this beautiful city and go on the Gondela èl teleficio`to the top of the hill that overlooks the city.
You would swear you were in the middle of Spain here
this is by far my favourite spot in Mexico.
Next morning i leave for Mexico`s second city Guadalajara to stay with Brian`s (a friend of mine) friends. Her name is Rocio and when she was younger herself and her sisters stayed in Brian´s house to learn english. So Brian and Rita generously organised for me to stay here.
