Today we packed-up our field bags, and loaded our four-wheel-drive trucks for the journey back to our hotel in Mae Sariang. We exchanged hugs with many of the refugees before we piled into the trucks, and drove out of the camp. It is hard to comprehend all of our experiences within the past few days in the refugee camp, and we were all very reflective as we drove away. We solemly realize that we have the freedom to leave the camp, and that we leave behind 12,000 people who do not.

Over the past few days we have learned that the many of the Karen are separated between different refugee camps, and are not allowed to visit each other. Many of them do not know if their families are dead or alive, or where they might be located. We also discovered that large numbers of refugees are being relocated to different countries such as: Canada, Australia, Norway, and America. Families are being separated, and some refugees are being forced to leave the camps and return to Burma. This is a death sentence, as they will be captured by the Burma army when they are discovered, and suffer hard labor, torture, and often death. More information on this topic may be found on the Free Burma Rangers website located at: http://www.freeburmarangers.org/.

We have met some incredible people, and have learned that there are many ways to communicate with those who do not speak our language. We have snapped a gazillion photos, and have enjoyed a taste of a new culture. This experience has given us a broader view of the world, and also of God.

When we returned to Mae Sariang, we had time for a quick shower, and a short rest before we were off to enjoy a special dinner and visit at Crestos Mission. Crestos Mission is a Karen Bible School, and hosts about 60 students as well as about 20 orphans. Pat & Geoffrey
