Our final flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand lasted only one hour, but seemed to us to be the longest, as we were truly tired of flying! We landed around 6:00pm to beautiful clear blue skies and bright sunshine, and were met by several friends of the Partners staff. We spent about an hour just collecting our luggage, as some of it had arrived into the domestic terminal, and some had arrived into the international terminal. All of the bags arrived safe and sound, and we loaded them and ourselved into four vehicles (three trucks and a van) to shuttle to our hotel.
We were quite surprised by the crowd as we first arrived to the Montri Hotel, as an early New Year's celebration was underway. Across the street from the hotel, just the other side of an ancient wall, the courtyard was filled with food and craft vendors as performers entertained from a large stage. The streets were lined wtih people, vehicles, people, shops, people and more people! Unloading all of our luggage in the bustle was quite an experience. The hotel lobby was piled high with our bags and Action Packers as we awaited our check-in.
Our rooms are located on the top floor, and they look-out over the city from the front of the hotel. We have a great view of the city and the nearby festivities. We all enjoyed a shower and a change of clothes before we ventured just across the street to enjoy dinner at the Art Cafe with the Fetters family. Then it was back to the Montri for some much-needed sleep in a comfortable bed. Though the celebration in the streets lasted until midnight, most of us were fast asleep well before then.
