Walked into town again this morning for a gander around being overtaken by a motorized skateboard along the way (always wanted one of them when I was younger).
Ended up looking around the marina watching a few helicopters come and go for those paying for the privilege of a birds eye view of the reef thinking they were maybe the sort of people like whoever owned the huge luxury yacht parked in the marina until I noticed the personal helicopter nestled on top.
With my day on the reef booked for tomorrow I decided to check out the Reef Teach lecture I'd heard was recommended held every evening by an Irish marine biologist named Paddy. I'd also heard he was best described as an Irish Billy Connelly or Ace Ventura of the sea. As the lecture got underway it was clear why
I don't think he spent a second of the 2 hours of the lecture standing still always jumping and throwing himself about, slapping the board and making weird noises to the extent I'm sure he did not have blood running through his veins but pure caffeine. He talked us through what we were likely to see out there in both fish types and coral and all about how the reef was formed and is continually changing as well as how to help protect it.
By the end of the show though I had learned a lot from fish and coral to marine life cycles and hoping to put my new found knowledge to use tomorrow by being able to identify some of the stuff I would hopefully see if I could first get the image of a mad hopping Irish man out of my head.
I'd recommend the show even if you were not planning on heading out to the reef just for the entertainment value alone.
Plus the free biscuits.
