A smoother ride back on the boat to the mainland saw the bus journey north just as pleasant with a friendly German girl talk to most of the way until Mission Beach making me almost consider getting off here too.
Unfortunately things took a turn for the worst with Pride and Prejudice being the movie of choice on board during which I'm sure I heard a few guys at the back reaching for the emergency exit.
Things livened up a little more though on almost running over a Cassowary, a flightless bird looking like a cross between and emu and a turkey but few in numbers getting it's face on a few road signs warning against what we almost did.
Arriving in Cairns with no where booked I chose the place with a free courtesy bus to the hostel which was needed given the distance from the city centre but it did turn out to be the cheapest place I've stayed in here at $14 a night which even included a free meal every evening. Just don't expect to not feel hungary afterwards though.
