Sue and Nigel who I stayed with in Mackay mentioned they had a relative living just outside Airlie Beach and I was more than welcome to stay. Not wanting to impose myself on someone who was no more than a relative of relative of a friend back home I found an email stating a bed was all ready and waiting and with me having to wait until tomorrow for the bus to Townsville it was hard not to accept.
And glad I did too, staying in a great place on a hill side overlooking the whole area around Airlie Beach and across the bay to the Whitsundays from the view from the veranda outside my room.
Pulling my eyes away from the view we spent the day going for a wander through a local rainforest trail and then onto Shute Harbour for more great hill top views of the islands and area.
Even though traveling on a budget I found myself sitting down to my 4th steak dinner in barely a week as we relaxed overlooking that amazing view accompanied by some good red wine watching the lights below switch on at dusk. Beats another hostel dorm any day.
