I had to pick up my visa at lunch time that I'd arranged yesterday after nervously parting with my passport overnight, could have got it the same day if I went earlier. To pass the time till then I walked up Nathan Road to Yuen Po St Bird Market where birds are put on display, groomed and sold. By the end of the market I turned and headed back passing the bird flu warning poster on the way - great, now they warn you..
Crossing back over Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry I took a bus to Stanley on the South side of Hong Kong island. Stanley has a large market selling all kinds of cheap clothes and other goods but the only thing I bought was a drink while still trying to adjust to the heat. There were plenty of decent beaches in the area including Repulse Bay which if I had something to swim in with me would have been pretty tempting for a dip.
Stopping off in Aberdeen (hey must be close to home already) on the way back with the plan to see the famous floating restaurant and the busy harbour, although nothing like what it was back in it's day with many families living on the boats in the harbour. I took the free ride out to the restaurant which also saved paying for the $40 Sampan harbour tour and viewed the large but very touristy Jumbo Floating Restaurant as it called itself.
Back in Kowloon I wandered down to the waterfront to watch the Symphony of Lights show which takes place every night at 8pm when many of Hong Kong's buildings and skyscrapers put on a light show to music which is pretty cool. While watching I met Cherry who lived in Hong Kong and told me the names of all the buildings involved.
We went for something to eat while I got to practice a little Cantonese and Mandarin which was certainly no match for her English so she thankfully ordered from the Cantonese only menu so I wouldn't get a plate of stewed rat with a stick of celery in both ends. Can't stand celery.
