Yesterday we hired a car nd some dive kit and headed 45mins north of Vancouver to horseshoe bay. We'd been into the dive shop on Granville Island and they'd recommended the place. Hire of equipment was rely reasonably priced too so we headed out. The day was pretty miserable - foggy and rainy, compared with a lovely weekend, the worst weather since we've got here. But wwe headed up the coast and met a couple of other groups up there who were going out. Wew kited up and swam out - our first shore dive. I had a new dive computer as well so lots to do! We went down and had an explore. Loads and loads and loads of star fish, never seen so many, or so many siffereeent colours shapes and sizes. A few other fish, but not great vis. The other problem was a difference in info on khedive computers, Graham thought we were quite deep, I thought we were at 6m. Anyway, dived for about 20 mins then came up. Turns out graham's computer was reading in ft and we were only at about 7m! I wasn't too keen on going for our second dive with just the 2 of us as vis wasn't great and we'd had some problems on dive 1 so we de-kitted and headed back into town for a nice lazy night in with a movie. It was labour day holiday monday, everything was shut!!
Today, my birthday, we went whale watching, and it was good fun. Saw lots of orchas, not the man eating viscous ones, these just eat salmon, but pretty cool just the same. Sailed out from the fraaer river, there are 30million salmon reported to be making the salmon run up river this year, the boats in the hrbour were full of fresh catch and on the way out and in we saw loads of salmon jumping, pretty amazing. We sailed out into the gulf islands - USA island on the left and Canadian islands on the right. Then we got to San Juan islands and found the pod of orchas. There were mums and calves and lots of females playing around in the surf and fishing for salmon. We wtched for a good while, got some good photos then headed back to see a larger male hunting further up river. We also got to see see lions and seals, some in the water, and some bathing out on the rocks waiting for high tide to bring their salmon dinner to them! Made good use of my binos (birthday present from mum and dad) and will use the fantastic photo birthday present from the girls for some of the photos we got today. Off out tonight for birthday dinner, not sure where yet, but all in all a very good day.
Setting sail on the cruise to alaska tomorrow. Been really nice to have 5 days in the same place, have started coming down to the bar in my slippers (tho not my pjs yet!), not looking forward to packing again tomorrow!
