Where I stayed
windermere backpackers
I have spent the past few days in the lakes district which is a stunning place. Aside from the rain (which was pretty constant the first few days) and the moving hostels every night I really enjoyed it here.
The first night I stayed in Windermere. I got in quite late in the evening but got up early the next morning and walked down to the lake and had a bit of a wander along the edge. It was really pretty and was quite nice as there was no one else about at that time of the morning. I also wandered through the town to have a look and also walked to Bowness and had a look there as well.
The afternoon i set off for Shap as this was where I was planning to spend the next couple of nights. However, after getting off the train at Penrith and then having to wait 2 hours for a bus i started to change my mind. Also there were severe weather warnings for the next 2 days in this area and there being about 5 shops and 2 pubs in Shap I decided to change my mind and headed back to Ambleside for the night. So I basically spent an afternoon on the train but it was pretty looking out the window and so was all ok.
The next morning I had a bit of a look around Ambleside and spending most of the time in coffee shops trying to avoid the rain before setting off for Hawkshead. Hawkshead is a really cute little town and it was really nice to have a bit of a look around here. The place I was staying was about 1 mile outside of the town and so I found the walking tracks to get into town rather than walking on the road. The walking tracks are really cool, they are only marked by little signs that say public walkway but you end up cutting across people properties, using their driveways as well as going next to their houses and barns - which was quite different to how things are at home.
The next day I headed back to Ambleside for a couple of nights which was nice. It was finally semi decent weather and so I went for a few walks up and down lots of hills. This was heaps of fun and I got some really amazing views while out and about.
The last day of my time in the Lakes District I joined a bus tour and saw a bit more of the northern area that I had not been too yet. This I also enjoyed. Again the weather was ok so it was nice to get out and stretch my legs and wander a bit.
The next morning I set of for Scotland.
