After renting the car in Venice and having studied the maps over and over to make sure we didn't take a wrong turn, and after getting directions from the guy at the rental car, and focussing on exactly where we had to go, I almost immediately got lost upon leaving Venice. Nonetheless, we eventually found our way west and into the Dolomites where we were staying at the town of Pergine Valsugana, which is located about 20 minutes east of Trento. The 13th century castle is very impressive from a distance, and as we strolled around the grounds, high in the mountains. Inside, however, the hotel is modern and non scary (too bad, I expected some ghostly experiences). The bed in the room looked like it was from the 13th century, but the hotel owner told us that it was a reproduction. We spent the day simply relaxing in the garden and walking the ramparts. Dinner was included in their excellent restaurant. The experience was very interesting and we were glad we stayed here. Next day we headed across the mountains to Lake Como.
