Weirdly for the most part the Philippines in terms of places so far has been pretty sub par. We haven't really liked any town or city at all, maybe Sagada but even there wouldn't make our top 15 places. The weird part though is that we have had some really good fun and different days. The last two in particular, inspite of the weather and surroundings. This isn't to say we haven't seen some stunning beautiful places it's just we haven't stayed in them.
The weather is pretty poor again. We can snorkel but our scuba destinations are already determined and this isn't one of them. There's no beach to speak of and we aren't entirely convinced moving to another town will yield anything too much nicer. Irritating as it is to move on again after just one day it seems stupid not to. As we had only woke up at 10:30 and in between deciding this and saying bye to J/R we had managed to miss the boat back to Batangas. We wouldn't have if Charlotte had let me run for the fucking boat.
Not to fear, the other option is a little more complex but it means we can see more of Mindaro. First we got our own jeepney down to Puerta Galara town. Then we got another cheaper jeepney which we had to wait to fill down to Calapan. The journey was near 2 hours, 2 hours in the back of jeepney is not at all fun. The journey was nice though, all coast road and rainforest. From the looks of things so far, nowhere comes close to the Philippines in terms of scenary.
Off the jeepney immediately into a minivan which we had to briefly wait to fill. The minivan guy asked if we had been to Roxas before, when we said no he told us the price, hmmm .It filled. It filled some more. Grown men were sat on other grown mens knees. We got chatting to a nice local lady, we took the opportunity to ask her how much the journey to Roxas costs locals, it was 50php cheaper, she said just pay the driver what I tell you and he will think you know.
4 hours and a school run pickup later we arrived near Roxas port and did exactly what the lady said and saved ourselves 80p, yessss. My entries may have painted Filipinos in a mixed light, that's probably because so far it's been a mixed bag. Basically normal everyday people are unusually nice whilst the people probably with the least money are just as bad with tourists as everywhere else in the world. Still the nicest people we have encountered in general on our travels, narrowly piping the Thai's.
Roxas port has about 6 little hotels, a few restaurants and not much else, mainly all the service people waiting to get boats to the Visayas where Boracay resides. We tried a couple of hotels which were vastly overpriced before getting probably our biggest bargain room so far 250php for a nice little room.
Outside the hotel and on the way to the boat place we got hassled by a couple of girls who were wanting us to buy a Balut. These are a delicacy here, an egg in it's shell with a chick featus inside. I didn't want to eat it without seeing it first so I paid the 25p or whatever for the girl to eat it. It was fucking disgusting, it was black, I remainded diplomatic when they were telling me it's good for my knees. After this they were hassling Charlotte for her Facebook and a guy was wittering on about sponsoring them, Charlotte put a fake address.
The boat leaves at 4am to Caticlan. We have to come back at 3am to buy a ticket. We have an early tea at a big empty restaurant. The restaurant has a monkey on a tiny leash and a dog wandering around at the back. The staff are dicks. The food, my lord, no meal in my memory ever stands out like this. Pork sisag, I've had it before, everything else on the menu was unfamiliar. It arrived, it looked nice. The pork, if it was pork, fuck knows, it was chewy yet crunchy, it looks like bone but it was soft. I asked the lady if it was pork she said yes but then I heard them laughing in the kitchen. Fuckers, and it was expensive.
We've noticed some funny little notes that alot of the food and drink packaging has. Apparently Filipinos don't know the word diet so presumably they don't have the same rules about lying to people on, for example, coke cans. A coke can explains about how we need x amount of water a day, so why not kickstart with a coke. I've seen this sort of thing now numerous times on various bad for your products. I guess it was the same in England until not so long ago?
Having to be up at 3am we thought it best to try to sleep even if it was only about 7pm. We had a fan room, just as we got onto bed to watch TV there was a brownout. We no longer had a fan room. Even if the weather is up and down it's usually pretty sticky. Now it was awful. A brownout is the name they give to a blackout, not entirely sure why. We asked the woman when it would return but the whole town was gone. Charlotte went to pay, the woman insisted that it was 350php not 250php. I got angry. I'm hot, I have to get up at 3am, I've just eating pig shit and now they are fucking us on the price. I broke the wire out of the back of the TV, you know, to show them and then we watched the laptop and sweated ourselves to sleep just as the lights all came back on. 2 hours later.
Weirdly, as I'm writing this Charlotte has just told read that pork sisag is pig ear and jowl. That explains it then.
