The last few days have been interesting to say the least. We checked out of our room in Samui on Friday morning and went to the pick up spot for our taxi to the pier. We were trying to book our flights from Bangkok to Hanoi for 21st January but our bus arrived fifteen minutes early. We insisted they let us finish what we were doing and let's just say we made no friends on the mini bus. We still made it to the pier in plenty of time and managed to get our flights too. Score! The boat filled up pretty quickly and soon we were on our way to Ko Phangan. The ferry took just under an hour but probably took another half an hour to get everyone off with their bags.

On Ko Phangan the full moon party takes place in Haad Rin on Sunrise beach so we decided it would be better to stay on Sunset beach on the other side of the peninsula because it would be cheaper and quieter but still only a few minutes walk away. In the end we actually went for the lowest price area we could on a beach called Leela Beach. Well we certainly got what we paid for. We had rang ahead and they told us they had a bungalow for 300 Baht per night which is about €6. Alan took a look at it while I stayed with the bags. Alan was happy with it but when we went to take the room we were told another room on the beach for 600 Baht had just become free so Alan went to look at. He couldn't decide which one to go for so I went to look at the one in the forest.

Well, there was no way in hell that I was going to stay there. It was in the forest with no lights around it and there was a hole in the wall of the toilet which was the most basic "bathroom" that I have ever seen. A hose to wash yourself with, a self flushing toilet and no sink. The wood was rotting and there were coconuts on the ground around the hut which meant one thing....a possible nut to the head...a tad dangerous. So we took the room for 600 on the beach. It wasn't much better but at least the path to it was lit. In fact the room was pretty much the same facilities wise except it had the added bonus of being a part of a terrace block so we had paper thin walls with peep holes, a non closed bathroom so that you could look over the wall into your neighbour's bathroom and the same hose facility to wash with. Also plenty of "friends" lived in the toilet.

We were quite hungry after our journey so we went to get some food in their restaurant, and pretty much just hung out there for the day chilling out with some beers and chatting to other people. While we were there lots of people complained about their rooms but the manageress was a very rude and ignorant woman who had clearly never heard of customer service. Some people had already paid and wanted to leave but she wouldn't give them their money back. It was just nuts. We didn't have the luxury of moving and with the full moon party the next night we knew that everywhere would probably be booked out or too expensive for us. We met a gang of friends drinking in the communal area that evening and just hung out with them for the night. There were two sisters from The Netherlands, three German guys and a Swiss guy. Anouk, Nienca, Christian, Jans, Felix and Matis. Late in the evening Alan and two of the lads went out to check out the beach where the party would be the following evening. There were a few bars open with pumping music and crowds of people outside them dancing and drinking. The lads soon came back and we had a relatively early night, hitting the hay around 3am.

The next day we slept as late as we could so that we'd be able to party all night. We hit the beach with our frisbee for a while and generally took it easy. At about eight we met the gang for a few relaxed beers in the communal area and then about midnight we headed out to the madness of the infamous Full Moon Party. We arrived on the beach to pumping sounds and luminous colours. There were all kinds of people there. There were the usual dance party posers up on the podiums thinking they're the sh*t, then there were the mad ravers who are just in they're own world dancing to the music, then there's the people who just want to experience the f*ck out of it as a friend of a friend says. We grabbed a beer and danced a while before moving along to the next bar. We basically did that for the night. The beach has got maybe 20 bars along it and each one is playing different music the whole way along so if you don't like the music in one place you just move on to the next. We bought the buckets again which completely mess you up. It's basically a nagan of spirit (vodka in my case), a can of soft drink and a bottle of red bull. The red bull though isn't what we get at home and I've heard its illegal in Europe so its probably not the safest of things to drink but as they say...When in Rome... The beach was packed with 10,000 people and there were fire dancers and all sorts going on along the beach. There were of course plenty of drugs around and plenty of people taking them but it was just as enjoyable for those of us not tempted to join in. They say two foreigners have to go into psychiatric care every month from bad experiences with drugs at the full moon parties. Apart from that though I saw no one fighting, no one passed out and nothing too shocking. We partied late and crawled into our beds having had a great night but totally shattered.

We of course slept pretty late today and got a greasy plate of food for breakfast. We had no inclination to do anything all day so we just sat around on the internet and stuff. We went for some dinner in town with the Dutch girls and then strolled around the shops before heading back to our bungalows for a couple of beers with the others. We'll have an early night as we are leaving tomorrow to go to Ko Tao. Can't wait to get out of this dump and hoping that the next place is a bit better.
