Today was the very best nature day ever. We started by visiting various beaches n the area and trod along three rainforest boardwalks of varying lengths, 450 to 1200 metres. Apart from the forest scenery we saw various indiginous creatures including a hugh white spotted monitor lizard about a metre and a half long, not including tongue.
The best I've saved until last. I heard a movement in the forest and we both stayed still and quiet. Out of the undergrowth came a fully grown Cassowary with a chick. At about 2 metres tall, a Cassowary is definitely a bird not to be messed with. Even the ungainly chick was about the size of a swan. We've seen the size of atheir eggs in the natural history museum in Sydney and laying them must hurt even a 2 metre bird. The site of a Cassowary in the wild is, believe me, a very moving and memorable experience. Something so rare that we will be extremely unlikely to see it again.
Later in the day we travelled to Port Douglas, 70km north of Cairns and booked 2 nights in the area.
