Only 640 km today and most of those on petrol costing 50% more than in the cities. We should be able to slow down in a few days and really find time to relax.
We have just crossed the longest stretch of completely straight road in australia, 90 miles withour deviation. What fun!
The best part of the day apart from the wonderful warm weather was the half hour stop at a roadworks on the main highway., the first we had seen for 500 km. A man with a round red stop sign on a stick, the australian equivalent of our lollipop lady, forced us to stop. We were there for half an hour while all the roadwork lanes were moved around. We had a long and pleasant chat to the guy who informed us that he did a five week shift and lived in caravans at the side of the road which moved on with the roadworks. We wore a bright orange vest which prevented traffic from turning him into roadkill, but unfortunately it doubled as a fly magnet. He has covered in swarms. What a job.
Every 100km or so in that part of the country, there were signs saying RFDS emergency landing ground. The landing ground was the road, which was widened slightly for a few hundred metres. We don't know why the flying doctor service needed these runways because absolutely no-one lived within 100 miles of them.
On the journey here the traffic density was so slight that nearly every driver and passenger waved as they passed another vehicle. The full hand and not just 2 fingers, so they must be friendly.
Tonights park is the Pink Lake Tourist Park and is at Esperence. We obtained a 10% members discout even though we are not members. We intend to stock up on supplies in the picturesque town before moving on.
