We tried sleeping with the air con last night (which costs an extra 5 Reals!) and slept much better than the night before, despite Katie picking up a few more bites to add to her impressive collection of mosquito art!
It had rained all night and was still raining when we peered outside, so we glumly had our breakfast and prayed that it would clear up later.
We took some laundry in, booked a bus back to Fortaleza tomorrow, confirmed our flight from there to Salvador on Thursday, took the Babel DVD back and after that it looked a little bit brighter outside, so we decided to go for a walk.
With the crap weather today we were regretting not making more of the good weather yesterday morning, when we easily could have explored the area on foot or maybe rented a sand buggy.
Probably the most famous natural attraction in Jeri is a stone arch down on the beach.
Every tourist advert you see in the country promoting Jeri ALWAYS features this arch, so we went to find it on the northern coast by the lighthouse.
We walked out of town, along the sand trails...
... past the lighthouse and then climbed down the slippery slope to the beach, which wasn't easy wearing flip-flops!
We made it down safely and were rewarded with a really good view of the famous arch right in front of us.
I walked through the arch to sit by the sea crashing into the rocks and Katie followed, posing for a photo underneath the arch.
We sat on the rocks for a while, pondering life's complexities while the sun shone brightly on the deep blue seeeeeea ;)
After that we walked down the beach, crossing the rock pools...
...looking out to sea...
...and finally walking up the beach, across the equally famous grey sand.
By now the weather was definitely clearing up a bit and there was even some blue sky to be seen!
We continued to walk along the beach, which sometimes required wading through waist-high water to get around the bigger rocks.
That probably wasn't the most sensible way to get past these obstacles, but it was certainly a challenge to keep the camera, contents of pockets and Katie's day bag dry... we just about succeeded!
When we reached the end of the beach we walked back through town, washed the salt out of our clothing and hung it all up to dry, changing into a fresh set.
While I was sitting in the pousada I saw a TINY frog, which is apparently fully grown, it was the weirdest little thing, it was the size of a big fly!
Check it out!
After that we went to find somewhere for lunch and settled on a cool little cafe near the main street, which served up a great looking tuna sandwich for Mrs Fey Jr and a pretty good cheeseburger for moi.
The food took a while, so by the time we left it was 3pm, with the Liverpool v Arsenal game kicking off in 45 minutes local time, so I was (and still am with 30 minutes left) extremely nervous!
Nowhere in town seems to have cable tv, so I've given up trying to watch it, knowing that I can at least get the minute-by-minute text commentary on the BBC website.
(Later)
What a game!
I watched us go 1-0 down on the live text service (which was greeted with a very loud obsenity from the writer!), after which Big Sami equalised, which prompted another bout of more positive swearing!
The football fans among you reading this will know that after these first two goals the game went absolutely mental, with Liverpool taking a 2-1 lead through Torres, then Arsenal scoring an equaliser (which would have sent them through).
Shortly after this Gerrard scored a penalty and then Babel scored a 4th for those Mighty Reds to win the game 4-2 and put us into the semi finals of the Champions League for the 3rd time in 4 years!
Quite an achievement, YOU LEGENDS :)
Watching a game via a minute-by-minute text service has to be the most stressful way to follow a game I've ever experienced!
When the goals went in I was either swearing at the top of my voice, or swearing at the top of my voice!
The other people in the internet cafe must have wondered what the hell the loser in the Liverpool shirt was getting so excited about!
WHATEVER, who cares, we did it!
God I love those Reds.
After all that excitement we went out to have a nice dinner to celebrate and as you can see I was in rather a good mood for some reason!
The food was really good and we even tried some Brazilian wine tonight, which was definitely drinkable but nowhere near as good as the Argentinian or Chilean stuff.
I went to bed with dreams of another Champions League final in Moscow playing out underneath my flickering eyelids, knowing that Jeri would be added to the list of places which have extremely happy football memories for me!
Congratulations Liverpool and thank you Jericoacoara!
Lots of love,
Al & Katie xx
