Day 14 - Nong Khiaw

We both woke up early (7am) but felt rested so we got up, showered and went for some breakfast. This time the mosquito net worked well and we had no bites to add to our impressive collections.
It was quite misty outside, but it was obvious that we were in a lovely little town, with some great views. It was good to be in a nice guest house for once also !

We decided to save some money by having breakfast elsewhere, and instantly regretted it, Katie's omlette was poor, and my noodle soup was about the worst thing I've ever tasted, with barely warm water and dodgy noodles with only spring onions for flavour.
I even added pepper, which anyone that knows me will know that I detest, but I had to add SOMETHING, it was even more bland than John Major talking about wallpaper while knitting.
We did meet a Swiss couple who were lovely, swapped a few notes on travelling in Laos and headed off to the boat landing to try and work out how the system worked. Surely it couldn't be that difficult to book a boat down to Luang Prabang ?
We came back none the wiser, but we did learn that you have to charter a boat, which costs - in my best Doctor Evil voice - 1 MILLION Kip (about GBP 60), and if you can find others to share your boat the cost comes down dramatically. A group of 10 people would mean paying only 10,000 Kip each (GBP 6 !) for an 8 hr journey. The only question is, how the hell do we find 8 other people wanting to do the same journey ?!
The ride itself is supposed to be the most beautiful boat ride in all Laos, and we could imagine why. When the morning mist cleared we saw that we were staying in a town located between a number of mountains, with the river cutting a strong path through the middle, it was stunning.
As you can see, our guesthouse was also right on the river bank, it was lovely.

We did absolutely nothing all day, which was fantastic. We sat on our balcony and sunbathed, and read our books.
Katie is reading about the Killing Fields of Cambodia, and I'm reading about the Vietnam war, so both really happy books then ?!
We had lunch in the resort restaurant which was tasty (see below), walked around the very small town and then went back to the balcony to chill.

The town itself was like a Mexican border town, not much to write home about: This place is all about the river.

We also spoke to our parents today which was great, really good to hear that they're reading the blog and enjoying it, hope the same applies to a few others ? ;) Shame I missed my Dad but will hopefully get to speak to him next time.
Ok, that's all for tonight, next post will be from Luang Prabang, which is supposed to be a charming French city in the Laos jungle, where everyone plays petanque & eats croissants ?! Sounds VERY weird, so looking forward to it !
Oh and the PCs here aren't very good so loading photos up is painful, but don't worry, there will be none of us sunbathing ;)
Take care everyone, lots of love,
Al & Katie xx
