Hi everyone,
We finally left London at 11pm last night after the usual Heathrow delay and for once both of us slept on the flight.
I watched the Fantastic Four movie so went to sleep dreaming of Jessica Alba, which is never a bad thing ;)
When we arrived in Bangkok at about 4pm local time we had to queue at passport control for over an hour (hello?!) and so after collecting our backpacks we couldn't wait to get to our hotel...
It was the first time in Bangkok for both of us and our first impressions were, erm, rather 'aromatic'!
I thought that we might have accidentally got off the bus at the local sewerage facility but no, this was a main road. The smell was pretty awful, but I guess welcome to Bangkok!
It was also cloudy but VERY warm & humid.
Big rucksacks on our backs + small rucksacks on our front = total sweatfest.
We walked to our first (very basic) hotel, checked into our tiny room, had a nice cold shower and then went out for something to eat.
We had dinner in the food court of the local shopping centre (prawn noodles, chicken satay and 2 smoothies all for about 4 quid) and then walked around some of shops.
I managed to keep Katie from buying anything, until I nearly made her sick by buying her some Japanese 'takoyaki', which are small balls of octopus (as opposed to 'octopus balls'!) in batter, which I remembered fondly from Japan as being a delicious snack.
I'm not quite sure why they were so different to what I remember but these were absolutely disgusting. Even I couldn't eat them and that's saying something!
It's now about 9:30pm and we're just about to hit the sack.
It's really hot in the room (I think our air-conditioning is powered by a hamster on a wheel), but hopefully we can get to sleep quickly and be ready for a full day's sightseeing tomorrow.
The plan is to get our train tickets to go 8 hours north on Thursday, then jump on the 'Sky Train' monorail system to get to the riverside.
From there we will take a riverboat up to the Grand Palace and have a wander around the more traditional west side (aaaiiit) of the city in the afternoon.
We're both a bit nervous how hot it's going to be tomorrow with the sun beating down on our fragile white bodies, but let's see worry about that if we need to! I guess that will be a nice problem to have ;)
Sorry to any of you that we didn't get a chance to touch base with before we left and we hope that all is well back home!
Lots of love,
Al & Katie xx
