Day 83 Saturday 8 Sept – Port Douglas

We postponed our days diving on the reef for when we go to the island and headed up the Captain Cook Highway and then inland to Mareeba to see the start of the outback after leaving the coast and the rain forests.

The drive over Black Mountain & Mount Danbulan was quite magnificent as the forest dwindled and became very dry. Surprisingly we passed a couple of marshlands and a huge lake, all of which had good bird life. Mount Malloy was another tiny town, then 45km further we got to Mareeba, which was like driving through Lydenburg on the way to Ingwelala.

They had a Saturday market on and we popped in to see these foreign people selling their crafts and had a bratwurst roll with sauerkraut for lunch. The trip back through Kuranda was a reversal of what we had done in the morning now seeing the transformation from dry bushveld to the lush green rain forest.

When we got to the coastal road north of Cairns we stopped at a seaside resort called Clifton Beach, but it's not quite as posh as our Clifton.

Back at Port Douglas we climbed Flagstone Hill to the lookout point, but it only has views over Four Mile Beach due to the thick forest on the hill.

At about 4pm we drove (lazy hey) to the marina and walked around looking at the boats – some of the most impressive catamarans we’ve ever seen, and then sat and watched the dive tours come back and sunset tours leave while we had a sundowner.

We went to the seafood restaurant on Dixon Inlet for a great seafood dinner and are now waiting for the Springboks to sort out the Wallabies in Perth.
