So I jumped on a bus bound for bali, a nine hour ride.  That turned into an eleven hour ride because the bus was late picking us up.  That turned into a thirteen hour ride because of traffic.  Woohoo!  We eventually got into Denpasar, Bali at about ten thirty pm... I of course had not booked a room ahead of time, so I caught a taxi to sanur (a resort down just south of denpasar) and commenced wandering the streets to find some place to sleep.  As usual there was a friendly group of people hanging out on the corner who told me a good place to stay, so I didn't have to roam the streets of sanur all night.

Unfortunately Sanur didn't seem like such a great place when the sun came up.  I think perhaps it's just a bit of culture shock... I don't know that I was quite ready to be plopped down in the middle of a full blown western tourist resort.  Gazillions of foreigners wandering around all over the place, gazillions of balinese trying to sell them various things... it was a bit more than I could handle.  Plus most of the tourists seemed really kind of bitter and uptight... I was at the market grabbing a few things to eat, and the lady next to me started talking to me.  She basically complained for several minutes straight - how hot it was, how the beach was too crowded, how she couldn't find anything to eat that didn't make her sick.  It was sort of humorous, honestly.  I told her that I couldn't really relate, since I seemed to be lucky enough to avoid the food that makes people ill... she told me "just wait, you'll get bali belly eventually".  I laughed and said I'd been gone for six months and had only gotten ill once, so I wasn't too worried.  She sniffed at me and walked away.  Have you ever had anyone actually sniff at you?  I thought that was just a figure of speech.  No, she actually went <sniff> and spun around and walked off.  It struck me as quite entertaining for some reason, so I started laughing, which probably didn't endear me to her... ah well.  Anyway, after a day in sanur I'd had enough of resort living and jumped on the ferry over to lombok.

More so the Gili Islands. I hope they are as nice as when I was there, Many, many, years ago. Bali tends to be loved to death and a cheap Austrailian vacation place. The loved part is subjected to complaints of course but it tend to be the nature of some tourists particularly the ones that go to large beach resorts. They don't quite understand why it is not like home, with a beach.

always take the train-estafet all the way from bandung to Bali, coz I get carsick quite easily. The trip would take about 36 hours with half a day stop in Surabaya. from banyuwangi you can take a bus provided by the PJKA all the way to Ubung.
Had never stayed in Sanur.
I hope you have a great time to Lombok. I never had the chance to go crossing the strait for annoying reasons:
