Happy New Year!
Entry 38 of 63 | show all | print this entry |
Hi all, sorry I've been a bit of a slacker in the last week. I'll try and get you caught up, although my camera's back at my guesthouse and the internet is expensive, so no pictures today. Sorry!
Cambodian new year was April 14th. It was a lot of fun - pretty much an excuse for the entire population to throw a three day party. The new year usually marks the approximate end of the hot/dry season, and the beginning of the hot/rainy season. To usher it in, the traditional thing to do is have a giant waterfight... so for several days you had to pay attention, or you'd get a plastic bag full of water in the side of the head. I kind of wish we had a holiday like that in the states, but I suppose it's a bit dangerous... especially when teenagers on motorbikes started throwing them, while driving. :-)
Also visited Bokor National Park, which is an old french hill station. When the french ruled cambodia, they had some serious problems with the hot season - apparently summer in kampot is a lot different than summer in paris. As a result they built a big resort up on the hill above town, where it was much cooler. Several casinos, a luxury hotel, the works. Of course it was all abandoned during the khmer rouge days... in fact, the vietnamese used the old buildings as a base when they were driving the khmer rouge out of the area. It's kind of a freaky place now - out in the jungle, with lots of fog rolling in and out, and these giant run down colonial buildings... if I ever get my pictures up, you can see. :-)
Anyway, on to sihanoukville....
