Robert Boardman & I first visited this park in winter 1995 as Peace Corps Volunteers. Much has happened since then:

Robert married a lovely Chilena, went to Wharton, and now has 2 daughters. I re-confirmed my distaste for the concept of ´work´ and gained 7 pounds in 3 weeks due to constant partying with old friends in Chile.

The Boardman family and I happened to be in Chile at the same time. Robert & I returned to Las Lajas 12 years after our initial visit and were rewarded with some incredible natural beauty.

Boardo & I tried to climb Volcan Antuco (11,500 ft). LEFT FOTO:  Us on the trail at about 10k feet overlooking the dazzling Laguna Laja. RIGHT FOTO: Us at about 10,500 feet (where we had to turn around due to shifting terrain).

LEFT FOTO: Glacier fields atop neighboring peak as we ascend Volcan Antuco. Its impossible to capture on film the splendor of blue-ish glaciers atop a Andes peak. This is cool stuff...

FOTOS BELOW: We also hiked a spectacular 3 hour trail that follows the Rio Laja as it descends from the high altidute laguna to the valley down below. The river literally flows underneath lava fields and is hidden in many places, seeing lite thru the window of majestic waterfalls (see below). Towering granite face mountains, a kick-ass river, distant peaks - this trail has it all! Below are 3 pictures from the trail.

FOTOS BELOW: trail head and Boardman family. The Boardmans live in Paris and daughters Anne-Marie and Rachel are tri-lingual (french, english, spanish). Parents Juanita and Robert are delightful people.

After departing from Boardo, I was able to see Jim Guisler. Jim, after Peace Corps, married Lorena (an incredibly intelligent doctor) and they, after spending 4 years in Jim´s hoosier state, returned to Chile (Los Angeles) in 2001. I visited them for a nite and we had a great asado. They´re picture here with their children Willy, Daniella, and baby Emily.

Shifting Terrain
Hey - what does 'Shifting Terrain' mean?? From what I can see in the pictures, the weather looks beautiful and you're walking on rocks. Or were you refering to 'Shifting Terrain' in your body??
