A great few days of hiking in the Guadalupe Mountains and checking out Carlsbad Caverns.
I drove through Roswell, NM (UFO HQ) from Albuquerque en route to the Guadalupe Mountains. A great job by the Natl Park Service showcasing a one-of-a-kind place.
The caverns at Carlsbad Caverns Natl Park are very cool underground caves with incredible rock formations -- the pictures below don't do justice - another place to add to your roadtrip destinations.
Guadalupe Mountain Natl Park is awesome with great flat and steep hikes. I climbed Guadalupe Peak (8.4 miles round trip up including a 3k ft elevation gain up to 8749 ft which is the highest peak in TX). The Park and the mountains actually sit on the border of TX and NM in west Texas - about 100 miles from El Paso. One is treated to stunning views of arid, mountainous, and vastly uninhabited land in every direction as far as the eye can see. (Also did the McCittrick Canyon Trail - very pretty 5 mile hike along a creek bed w/Fall colors). Below are some pictures and a video clip from the trail & peak of Guadalupe Mountain.
