After we left Richmond we hi-tailed it off of I095 as fast as we could and headed for U.S. Rt 17 which follows the coast south to Savannah. We only made it as far as Williamston, NC that night. In the morning we took a tiny little walk through the last preserved bottomland hardwood forest in the state, or maybe the whole world--it was hard to know. The trees were still bareless and we didn't see anything too exotic--a great blue heron, some carolina chickadees--like that. Except--TA DA! For the first time I saw bald cypress trees with accompanying cypress knees. Cypress knees are these bony protuberances that poke up all around the base of the tree. Another thing I've seen in pictures but never live and in their proteberant glory.
