Day three found us trying to make tracks toward Charleston. And guess what? We finally, irrevocably found the heart of spring--azaleas! We drove down to Washington, North Carolina to visit the Estuarium. How could you NOT visit something called an "estuarium?" We're in what's called the "low country", the coastal plain protected by the barrier islands. In North Carolina these islands are the Outer Banks, in South Carolina and Georgia they're now those posh golf meccas like Hilton Head, There are only the barest few of these islands that haven't been filled up with homes and playthings for the very rich. Don't ya love capitalism?
Any way, back to the Estuarium. Washington was a really charming town filled with huge historic homes. The waterfront along the river as it widens into Pamlico Sound has been fixed up and preserved with an artificial wetland that absorbs the town's storm runoff before going into the sound.
Some artist made all these huge crabs that are placed all over town. The picture is of the one in front of the estuarium, but we found them in the downtown area and on some of the side streets. We even got a badge that allowed us to be crabby all day!
