Surfing on the East Coast
Entry 6 of 38 | show all | print this entry |
I learned how to surf on Friday, I had a great time. We did a three hour lesson and I was able to stand up and catch several waves by the end of the lesson. However, the next day when we went out again without anyone knowing what they were doing, it was so hard. During the lesson you would lie on the surfboard and the instructor would push you straight into the wave, so you were just responsible for standing up and keeping your balance. Trying to make your way out into the ocean with a surfboard is extremely tiring and difficult, sometimes it took about 15 minutes. Half the time you are knocked over by the surf or you lose grip of the board. When you finally get out in the water, you have to paddle to catch the wave and stand. None of us were successful. We were using the free boards from the hostel, they were shorter than we were use to, but if you were decent I'm sure they would be okay. I'm giving surfing a break, the backs of my ankles are hurting and I was tossed several times to the ocean floor which gave me some nice bruises and scrapes. Surfing is a great workout, no wonder surfers always look good.
During my last day in Sydney I had an all-day ferry pass, so I stopped at the Olympic park and Manly. Even though, it was raining and there were no events going on at the Olympic park. It was still kind of exciting, since you could imagine what it would be like when the Olympics were actually going on. I can't wait until the games in August. Hopefully I will have tv access around then. If anything exciting happens for Canada please let me know or any other events since I have no clue what's going on in the world, I'm in my own bubble. I've done many walks along the beach. I've seen a few outdoor 50m pools and fitness centres right next to the ocean, it would be fun working out at those places.
On the way up to Sydney I stopped at the Warrumbungles National Park and Bingara, each for a night. On the way to Bingara, I started feeling really ill before lunch, it might have been something I ate. I'm not really sure, but I had to ask the bus driver to stop 3 times, the 4th time I couldn't wait until he stopped, so I found his trash can on the stairs. It was so embarrassing. When we got to the hostel I went straight to bed. Everyone was super nice and came to visit me several times during the evening as they enjoyed a bbq steak dinner and drinks at the pub next door. I was feeling better the next morning, so I did a nice 2.5 hour horseback ride. Oh, and I also met Fiona from Scotland. We are going to be travelling together for the next two months up to Cairns and stopping somewhere along the way to get a few weeks of work.
I think I'm finding food to be the hardest part of travelling. I'm constantly walking past bakeries and cake shops. When in the grocery stores, I'm craving so many different foods. At some point it will be nice to stay in one place for a few weeks to be able to cook a real meal. Even though most of the hostels have kitchens, I end up snacking throughout the entire day so I'm not up for a big dinner.
I start my dive course tomorrow, it should be tons of fun.
