Imperial architecture
Entry 5 of 7 | show all | print this entry |
Vienna is the center of classical music. It has imperial architecture; large stunning buildings with courtyards full of cafes fill the streets. At times it was difficult to take a step back to enjoy the grandeur of the buildings. I found this city completely overwhelming. The shopping is expensive and can be 3 times more than just across the border in Germany. They love to carbonate most drinks including apple juice, yop and iced tea.
Highlights included:
Walking around the old quarter focusing our efforts on the ring road. Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) Hofburg (Imperial Palace) Staata-oper Parlament Museumplatz Rathauspark - world food summer event. Snitzel and Radler were enjoyed while watching a video presentation of a medley of Mozart with the Friedrich Schmidt Platz as the backdrop. Schloss Schonbrunn (Palace) - Habsburgs Imperial Summer getaway with 1400 rooms. It was the Austrians attempt at not being outdone by the French Palace of Versailles.
Trip to Wienerberg proved to be unsuccessful as it was not a hill with an outlook.
Kursalon - Strauss and Mozart Koncerte. It is a small concert hall with a smaller orchestra (piano, violins, violas, bass, clarinet, flute, french horn, trumpet, percussion) that played the musts of Strauss and Mozart. Singers and dancers at times emerged to join the orchestra. It was a perfect combination of symphony, dance and opera.
