A Trip to the Oracle
Entry 13 of 50 | show all | print this entry |
Athens has a LOT to offer, but there is so much more to see and hundreds of islands to explore. I don't have enough time this trip to make it to all the islands of my choice(I will DEFINITELY be returning!), but I did go for the day to Aegina on Wednesday. My Canadian friends Hillary and Melissa met me and we made our way down to the ferry at Pareus. Of course, there was supposedly a strike that day of the transportation workers, but it didn't really effect our travels, metros and ferries were good! I always get soo nervous meeting up with people without a cell phone. They were a bit late and of course I'm standing there hoping they come and that I didn't get the time or place wrong. But they came!
Aegina is a very beautiful island. We had a really nice sunny, but not too hot day and really enjoyed ourselves. We enjoyed lunch along the water and then went to the 'beach,' which, as in most of the Europe I've been through hardly count in my normal idea of a 'beach'! We even went in the water a couple of times. The water was SO clear and a really pretty color of green! I think that Aegina must be some sort of Pistachio capital because they were everywhere. I had to get some...I wanted to get them for my Mom who loves them, but I don't think customs would have been too keen on that, and they might not have lasted because they are soo good! Freshly roasted that day!
When we returned we made plans one more time to meet Friday night and watch the sunset from Aeropagus across from the Acropolis. Then, this time affected by the strike I had to walk across town with my pack and daypack on the front (got to love that look!) to my second hostel here in Greece. The staff here is really nice and I really like the location, so close to the Acropolis. The view isn't quite as gorgeous from the roof, if we were just one story higher it would be a bit better, but it is still so stunning to look at the Parthenon beautifully lit at night! I love how well all of the ruins are lit up at night...its very romantic too!
I went up to see the Oracle(well not really!) in Delphi on Thursday on the bus from Athens. It was 3 hours away, but the six hours on the bus there and back were worth it. It was really neat to walk up the hill to the Temple of Apollo and see the stadium and theater. Another nice day too to enjoy walking around!
Only trouble...I am sick. Unfortunately I have a pretty intense cold (which made that climbing in Delphi way harder than it should have been!). The cleansing Delphi didn't cure me either!! I bought some 16euro Herbal cold medicine recommended by the phamacist yesterday morning...which despite my initial doubt and sticker shock I think is actually working. Another unfortunate...the cold appears to be migrating to my throat and lungs causing me to lose my voice and pretty much sound awesome...except not! I'm hoping I don't lose my voice completely...I have to talk to meet people!
Yesterday I did laundry for the first time (don't worry guys...I did some in the sink along the way so far!) which took 2 hours, but I was up early and saw the Temple to Olympian Zeus and walked around the outside wall of the Acropolis which actually turned out to be really interesting and I hadn't even realized what was there. It was a day of a few errands...new memory cards so I can capture the pyramids! Then I talked to Mom and Dad for the first time! So good to actually hear familiar voices!
Last night Hillary and Melissa were 45 minutes late. They were so sorry and I would have probably given them an hour anyway...remember I was late to the British Museum at the beginning of the trip so I am pretty forgiving! I was thrilled to see them hurrying up the hill though! They are great girls and I have really enjoyed getting to know them and exploring some of Greece with them too! It was an interesting if not pretty sunset, but it was fun to be up on the rock to watch even though it was like walking on marble, very slippy! We then had a really good dinner and wondered through the shops for the evening before finsihing off late with a cup of tea. Didn't get back here until almost midnight so I'm up early to post my updates!!
Hope everyone is well! Thinking of you often!
Loads of Love, Ali / Althea
