The city of shopping
Entry 20 of 59 | show all | print this entry |
The Air Asia flight was certainly akin to a Ryan Air flight. Free seating, no food, walk out onto the runway to get on the plane, landing like a sack of spuds, you know yourself. But for the price we paid we can't complain.
Kuala Lumpur is a nice city, but the public transport is a mess. It takes ages to get anywhere in the city. There are 4 metro lines that zip all over it but they are all owned by different companies who don't want to be integrated whcih means that to get from one part of the city to the other yo have to get 2 or 3 different lines, pay each time you change, and the worse part is you have to walk for anges, sometines outside and across major roads to get to the next train. Its all very Irish. The changeover stations must have been designed by the same guy who designed the Luas.
But apart from that it is a great city. The people are SO friendly and all speak excellent English. The shopping is great, there's about 60 huge malls here with everythng you could possibly want for less than it costs at home. We went to on of the newer ones last night called Time Square which is a 14 story monster of a shopping mall. You could easily get lost here. And the best thing is that we are here right in the middle of the summer sales so everything is even cheaper again!! My only spurlge of the trip was a Balenciaga bag which I got in a lovely Department store in Suria Shopping Centre. Unlike BT's they actually have proper shops not just concessions. I couldn't believe all the big names under one roof such as Lulu Guinness, Chanel, Cartier, Guess, DKNY, TAG Heuer, Hermes etc. Myself and Vinnie went into the Cartier shop for a laugh to see how much their watches where. I tried on a beautiful watch which was a bargain at only 22,000euro!!!!! We bargained 4 grand off the watch for the craic. The sales lady thought we were serious about coming back to get the watch (maybe my nearly real Chanel sun glasses fooled her!!).
Vinnie bought a casing for his camera which means he can use it underwater, so hopefully I'll be able to put up some nice photos of us snorkelling on the next entry, coz we're going to the the Perhentian Islands on Monday via Khota Bahru (which was our intended route). There's meant to be great snorkelling there.
Anyway, back to KL. We're staying in Chinatown/Little India which is an area of cheap markets and fanatastic food stalls. On our first night we stayed in a crappy hostel, which was recomended by our guide book. We left there and found a lovely hotel for pretty much the same price as the hostel. In this area you can eat a good meal for 2 for about 3 euros. The markets have all the same stuff that was in Bangkok (minus the brothels) but for even cheaper.
