A bit of Birthday luxury
Entry 16 of 59 | show all | print this entry |
Back to Bangkok. In the rain of course. It is my birthday on the 6th so Vinnie decided to treat me to a nice present (although in fairness he kinda treated himself too). We booked into the Pathumwan Princess hotel, a very nice hotel indeed, and got ourselves a nice suite. And I mean very nice.
It had a big sitting room with TV, DVD player and stereo, huge bedrooom with the biggest most comfy bed you ever saw and another TV, a walk-in wardrobe, massive jaccuzzi bathroom, and even a kitchen!! We had great views over the city too. We laughed for about an hour when we got into the suite. It's so funny, 2 backpackers on a budget traipsing into a top hotel, scruffy and smelly after a road trip from Cambodia. I mean you're not even supposed to wear shorts and sandals in the place which is pretty much all we have!!
Anyway, the next few days we spent shopping and sightseeing. The usual - grand palace etc.
The night of my birthday we went to look for this bar that sounded really good in the guidebook, of course it was closed down, but we stumbled across this nightclub and went in there. The staff obivously thought they there were it, as they made a big deal of letting us in. First they asked for passports to prove our age (now maybe as a newly 26 year old I should have been happy, but come on they were taking the piss), then when we didn't have them, they asked where we were staying. We showed them the hotel keycard (with no room number on it obivously..) and they let us in. Now what this has to do with our age I have no idea, but there you go. Anyway there was a great R'B band playing called the "unit". Keep an eye out for them, they were pretty good.
