Well today I felt like I had been to paradise and back.

I took a cruise out to Rottnest Island from Perth, which is the most westernly point in the whole of Australia.  It is an island that lies about 18 km off the coast of Perth.  And actually when you get to the most westernly point off Rottnest Island, the nearest land to the west off it, is South Africa.
This place was an old aboriginal penal camp where they kept the prisoners.  Nowadays it is kept as tourist accomodation.  On the 1 hour cruise out to it, we were entertained by a freindly school of dolphins, that jumped up and down out of the water as if knowing we were watching them.

I had booked a tour on the island some weeks back and when I arrived discovered that I was only one booked in for that particular time slot, so I has a personal guide for the island with a lovely girl called Adene.  I had a guided walking tour first that lasted 2 hours and met right away the island's most famous inhabitant, the quokka.  This little marsupial is only found on Rottnest island, and nowhere else in the wolrd and was first identifed as being a rat by dutch explorers over 200 years ago, hence the name, rottnest island.  It is actually like a little wallaby and very cute.

Then after my walk, I had some free time so I took a deep breath and went on a scenic tour of the island...... in a 4 seater airplane!!!!!  Yes the little tiny wee yokes that bump up and down and shake side to side.  I have never been in anything that can fly this small and to be honest...... dont know if I would do it again...... but it was fantastic...after I came down.!!!!  No seriously, the pilot was fantastic and the views....   well I know I will probably never experience anything like that again and will never forget it... 1000 feet up in the air and perfect blue skies to view the island below with turquoise water and white sand.  It was just magical.

The cruise back home in the sunset was lovely and included a wine tasting of wines of Western Australia.  What a lovely way to end a perfect day.
