Did you know that the 1988 Winter Olymic Games were held in Calgary in Canada, and this was the first winter games that Jamaca first participated.
Well Calgary was visited with one main activity in mind - the Clagary Flames v the Edmonton Oilers icehocky game!!! The first in Calgary of the season (well preseason) and well as there was no hockey last year the game was sold out. On the way into Calgary we did stop at the Olympic Park, where we were able to drive around most of it and we did go up the Ski jump tower - how anyone jumps off it is beyond me..... the slope was so steep... We got to the game in one piece.... Calgary is BIG - SO spread out. The game was interesting, they tried to look like they were playing but weren't really trying. The Flames won 5-0 but the Oiler had won the night before in Edmonton 4-0....mmmmmmmmm I wonder - there were no fights worth talking about, no real I'm going to kill you up against the glass moves but it was entertaining. The whistle would blow every once in a while..... for NO REASON.... I asked why... IT WAS FOR A COMMERCIAL BREAK!!! Could you imagine telling a ref in the middle of the All Ireland Hurling Final to blow the whistle cause the TV needs to put on some commercials..... I DON'T THINK SO!!! Especially if it is only 4 minutes since the last one.....
The game was on in the Olymic Saddledome, just next to the Stampeede!!! It was a fun area. We stayed with Shelley, a friend of Stacey's that night and went shopping and touring downtown the following day. We did the compulsory Calgary Tower and contemplated going to the Fort but just chilled for a few hours before hitting the road for Red Deer. More thumbnails ...
