It's not a fairy tale! Believe me, I saw it! There's this city made up of an accumulation of little islands, their streets are canals and their trasportation by boats, and people live there and their children go to school there, and somehow they don't all live in a continuous state of sea sickness!

I took the advice of a hostel-mate in Nice and got "lost" in Venice. I dipped deep into the labyrinth of its alleys and canals and observed a day in the life of the city.
Venice is one of those cities that puts a wide smile on your face just by being there. Every corner you turn there is a picture perfect view of a canal or of a tight narrow alley way or a floating church waiting to be shot. So new to the eye and so hard for the mind to grasp the possibility of normal daily life actually taking place in this magical city.
However, Venice seems more like a living museum these days. The daily life has turned to cater to and gouge the tourists in any way possible. Venice is riddled with artists and infested by tourists. Even the pigeons have figured out how to make the tourists hand over their lunch to them and walk away feeling like they are the lucky one!

I think a city like Venice is only possible in Italy. The total chaos and yet the smooth flow of events is exactly what I have felt in all of Italy, and only in Italy.
I think Venice would have been impossible and a pain to visit on a loaded bicycle, so I'm really glad I didn't ride my bike there. But I thought it was an amazing place, and I'm really glad I didn't leave Europe without seeing it.
