We kick off today with a little shopping in Union Square, but no matter where you are in the U.S.A most of the stores are the same. By the time we finish shopping its time to make our way to Alcatraz landing where we will catch a ferry to the famous island that was home to famous criminals like Al Conpone. When we first told the kids we were visiting an old jail, Arion seemed a little concerned, until I ensured him the jail was no longer operational but more like a museum now. As we make our way to the ferry, the sun is out in force but we bring our jackets as it is known to be quite breezy out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It only takes about 15 minutes to make it across and as the park ranger is informing us of the rules of the island, I am taking in the views of the steep rock that holds the Cellhouse. The ranger is done and we start our climb up a hill equivalent to a thirteen story building, walking past maintenance buildings, homes of the former guards that used to live and work here. When reach the cell house, we are provided with an audio set to explore and learn about the history of the jail. It was a little creepy to see the conditions the prisoners had to endure while the jail was open from the 1930's through out until 1967. The audio took about 40mins and was very well done with old guards and prisoners narrating there experiences around this famous jail. It's almost 5pm and we decide to return to Pier 33 in San Francisco where we will catching up with some very old friends for dinner.
