Boy, were we living in a fantasy world! We decided to follow route 16 through the bighorn mountains. It was touted as the safest route. I'm notnsure who decided it was the safest but I would hate to see the unsafe route! As we climbed into the mountains we were excited and amazed to find snow! We climbed out of the gas and enjoyed a little time in the mountain air. It was exciting to be above the tree line until we needednto go down the other side!
Talk about breathtaking! Rob calmly drove on as we traveled down, down, down steep and winding roads complete with hairpin turns and switchbacks. I had my passenger side brake all the way to the floor. About halfway down we began to smell the brakes heating up despite being in low gear. I have taken a number of pictures of our harrowing descent. If you look carefully, you can see the other vehicles clinging to the mountainside. Rob remained amazingly calm throughout the whole thing it was not until we were at the bottom that he admitted that he thought he needed to change his shorts! He did a remarkable job.
Once we were on level ground, I offered to drive but Rob declined. The landscape was barren and you could see the different layers in the hills. I guess that's why they are called the painted hills. Rob was finally ready to give up the wheel. I wasn't behind the wheel 30 minutes when we headed the wind river canyon. The turns were not as sharp but it was still steep with rock on one side and white water on the other. The canyon ended with a trip through 3 stone tunnels carved out of the mountain. By I was finished driving my hands were cramped from gripping the wheel so hard. West Hill Rd is a piece of cake compared to that.
We had to travel over yet one more mountain range before arriving at the airport at 6:00. Boy was Lola wrong that time! We got to camp by 7:15 and planned on hanging out by the fire after dinner. Well as we were setting up we realized we were smack in the middle of an all you can eat mosquito buffet. We put on the off and rob built a great fire to fend off the blood sucking invaders. We finished dinner and just as we were ready to head outsidenthenwind picked up and the thunder started rumbling. Would anything go right today.
After getting the kids to stop badgering each other, they were trapped in the gws for 10 hours. We settled in with a deck of cards and Smokey and the Bandit.(a Favorite of Rob's). The kidsd ended up liking it as well so i guess we did end up on a good note. There is no wifi or cell service so my entries may be late and the photos may be posted later. Thanks for keeping up with us and thanks for the comments. We all like hearing from you.
