The twin islands of Ko Phi-Phi Don and Ko Phi-Phi Leh (usually just referred to as Ko Phi-Phi) are two of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. While Phi-Phi Leh is uninhabited and undeveloped (although since its stunning Maya beach was the setting of the movie "The Beach", the number of visitors on day trips soared), with Phi-Phi Don (the bigger one of the two) it's a totally different story, we had visited the islands on a day trip in 2007, but didn't really realize the scale of the development here. We took a ferry from Ko Lanta to Ko Phi-Phi Don, and right at the pier we got picked up by a tout trying to sell us accomodation. All the cheap options were pretty much full, so she turned out to be quite helpful and found us a bungallow up a hill, no sea view, but hot water and AC, you can not ask for much more on Phi-Phi for 900B (18 euros) a night. We had to cross the whole main village on the way to our hut and already on the way we found the place quite shocking after the quiet and peaceful Ko Lanta. It seems like there is no low season here, as the place was packed with tourists, we haven't yet been to such a busy place in our entire trip. The village, squeezed between the 2 beaches of Ao Ton Sai and Ao Lo Dalam, is a maze of narrow streets lined with shops, restaurants, travel agents, dive shops, accomodation, etc., around it there are dozens of bungallow operations and hotels, it's not very pretty. The 2004 tsunami hit hard here and basically washed away the village, it was one of the worse affected areas in Thailand and many people lost their lifes.

On the afternoon we arrived, we walked up the hill behind our bungallows to the viewpoint overlooking the bays and village, from up there the view is stunning and it's clear what attracts so many people here, even the village bellow doesn't seem that bad from a distance. From there we continued, over a path that turned out a bit more difficult than we expected, to the much quieter small beach of Hat Rantee on the east coast. It was pretty peaceful there, almost like a different planet. The next day we did a couple of dives next to Phi-Phi Leh, where we expected to see sharks, whale sharks and turtles, although we saw none of those, the marine life was quite impressive and the dives were really nice. During the first dive the sea was quite rough, climbing back into the boat was a bit of a chalenge. We still had one day for beaching, but since the 2 beaches closer to the village were packed, we walked to Hat Yao (long beach), further to the east, which was a bit better, the walk there over the rocks was quite nice too.

There is plenty of nightlife in Phi-Phi, many bars and discos open late and many of the beach bars turn out beach parties at night, most of them featuring fire shows and makeshift dance floors. We couldn't help but going out a couple of times, and our favorite hang out was the Apache Bar at Ao Lo Dalam beach. The most popular drinks are the buckets (1/2 litre) of mixed drinks (also sold around the island as a kit including 1 small plastic bucket, 1 small bottle of liquer, and a fex soft drinks to mix), many people seem to be on a mission to consume as many of these as possible, so, before midnight, almost everybody is pissed, and love is in the air :-D. Being the experienced old bar dogs that we are, we stuck to our usual drinks and stayed away from the evil bucket.

As ilhas gêmeas de Ko Phi-Phi Don e Ko Phi-Phi (conhecidas simplesmente como Ko Phi-Phi) são duas das mais belas ilhas na Tailândia. Enquanto Phi-Phi Leh não é habitada e não tem infraestruturas turisticas (apesar de que desde que a espectacular praia de Maya foi um dos cenários do filme "A Praia" o numero de visitantes em excursões disparou), Phi-Phi Don (a maior das duas ilhas) é exactamente o oposto, nós tinhamos visitado as ilhas numa excursão em 2007 mas não nos tinhamos apercebido da escala do desenvolvimento turistico. Logo à saida do ferry em Phi-Phi Don fomos sequestrados por uma angariadora a tentar vender-nos alojamento. As opções mais baratas estavam lotadas, por isso a nossa sequestradora acabou por se revelar útil e arranjou-nos um quarto num local um pouco mais afastado do centro, não tinha vista para o mar, mas tinha água quente e ar condicionado, 900 baths (€18) por isto em Phi-Phi até não é mau. No caminho tivémos que atravessar toda a vila, e ficámos chocados com o movimento, Ko Lanta era muito mais calma. Parece que aqui não há estação baixa, pois a vila estava completamente apinhada de turistas. A vila, entalada entre as 2 praias de Ao Ton Sai e Ao Lo Dalam, é um labirinto de ruas estreitas com lojas, restaurantes, agências de viagens, escolas de mergulho, hotéis, etc., à volta há dezenas de hotéis e bungallows, não é um sítio muito bonito. O tsunami de 2004 atingiu Phi-Phi de forma particularmente devastadora, este foi um dos sítios mais severamente afectados, a vila foi practicamente varrida do mapa e milhares de pessoas perderam a vida.

Diving

Chegámos de manhã, e logo á tarde subimos à colina por trás do nosso hotel até a um miradouro com vista sobre as baias e a vila, a vista é verdadeiramente espectacular e é fácil ver o que atrai tanta gente a estas ilhas, à distância até a vila não parece assim tão má. Dai continuamos, através de um caminho que se revelou mais difícil do que pensavamos, até à muito mais calma praia de Hat Rantee, na costa leste. É um sítio bastante tranquilo, prece que estavamos noutro planeta. No dia seguinte fizemos um par de mergulhos em Phi-Phi Leh onde esperavamos ver tubarões, tubarões-baleia, e tartarugas, não vimos nenhuns destes animais mas ainda assim foram 2 mergulhos excelentes, pois a vida marinha é abundante. O mar estava um bocado encrespado durante o primeiro mergulho, por isso subir de volta para o barco foi um desafio. Ainda tinhamos um dia que tinhamos destinado a fazer praia, mas como as duas praias mais próximas estavam apinhadas de gente, caminhamos até Hat Yao (praia longa), mais a leste, que estava muito melhor, a caminhada pelas rochas também foi bastante agradável.

A vida nocturna de Phi-Phi é bastante agitada, há muitos bares e discotecas abertas até tarde e muitos dos bares da praia também têm festas à noite, na maior parte das quais há espectáculos de fogo e pistas de dança improvisadas. Não podemos evitar sair um par de vezes, o nosso sítio preferido foi o Apache Bar na praia de Ao Lo Dalam. A bebida mais popular em Phi-Phi é o balde (baldes de plástico de 1/2 litro de bebidas espirituosas misturadas, também vendidas por todo o lado na ilha como um kit contendo um balde uma pequena garrafa de bebida e bebidas para misturar), muita gente parece ter por missão beber o maior número de baldes possivel, antes da meia noite tá tudo bêbado, e anda tudo à caça :-D. Como velos e experiente lobos do bar que somos, não nos metemos nos baldes e ficámo-nos pelas nossas bebidas habituias: cerveja e vinho.

Souostrovi Ko Phi-Phi tvori dva ostrovy - Ko Phi-Phi Leh, kde vubec nic neni, jenom nadherna zatoka a plaz Maya, kde se natacel film Plaz (opravdu raj na zemi); a Ko Phi-Phi Don, ktery je vetsi a kdyz jsme ho loni navstivili, ani jsme netusili, co se skryva v jeho vnitrozemi. Z mirumilovne Ko Lanty jsme trajektem prejeli ke hlavnimu molu na Phi-Phi Donu a hned pri vystupu se na nas vrhla mistni prodavacka ubytovani. Nejdriv jsme ji vesele ignorovali, jak jsme si natrenovali v Indii, ale posleze jsme zjistili, ze vetsina levnych bungalovu je zabrana, takze pani se nakonec pochlapila a nasla nam jednoho levnouse na kopci, vyhled na more se sice nekonal, ale aspon jsme meli teplou vodu a klimatizaci, za 900B (450Kc) si clovek na Phi-Phi nic moc vic neporidi. Od mola k nasi chatce to bylo rychlou chuzi asi 15 minut a museli jsme projit celou hlavni vesnici, ktera se nachazi mezi dvema plazemi (twin bays) - Ao Ton Sai a Ao Lo Dalam. Prochazka to byla celkem sokujici, uz dlouho jsme nevideli tolik turistu, obchodu, restauraci, cestovnich kancelari, hotelu a center potapeni pohromade - jeden velky chaos, no nic moc, jeste ke vsemu neni sezona, nedovedeme si predstavit, jak to tu musi vypadat v prosinci, lednu, unoru.... :-)

Na ostrov jsme prijeli hned po ranu, takze odpoledne jsme jeste meli cas vysplhat na mistni Everest, vyhled z kopecku byl krasny a naprosto chapeme, proc je tady tolik turistu, i ta hrozna vesnice dole tam shora vypadala celkem mirumilovne. V mistnim bufaci meli cele album s fotkama z doby, kdy Phi-Phi zasahla desetimetrova tsunami, pri prohlizeni se mi chtelo brecet. :-( Z vyhlidky jsme sesli druhou stranou na vychodni pobrezi (stezka to byla jak pro kamziky, malem jsme se tam prerazili) na plaz Hat Rantee, bylo to jak nebe a dudy, na plazi byli krome nas jenom ctyri osoby a byl tu krasny klidek. Zpatky jsme jeli radsi lodi, na dalsi vystup a sestup uz jsme nemeli energii. Dalsi den jsme se jeli potapet a ocekavali zraloky, velryby a zelvy, ale zrovna ani jeden ze zivocichu nebyl doma. Ponorili jsme se dvakrat a i kdyz jsme nepotkali nic ze zminenych obyvatel, stejne se nam to moc libilo, videli jsme spoustu rybicek a koralu, ktere jsme nikdy predtim nevideli. Behem potapeni zacal foukat docela silny vitr a kdyz jsme se vynorili a meli vylizt zpatky na lod, tak se to pekne houpalo a chytnout se zebriku byl docela vykon, chvilema jsem si rikala, ze me ta lod priplacne a bude po me. Nakonec jsme to ale (cely namozeny) zvladli a stastne se vydali k domovu. Na Phi-Phi jsme si jeste naplanovali jeden den, kdy se budem jenom valet na plazi. Vzhledem k tomu, ze plaze u hlavni vesnice byly precpane, vydali jsme se na vychodni plaz Hat Yao (asi 45 minut chuze pres kameny, krasa!), kde to bylo o moc lepsi a lenosilo se nam tam skvele. :-)

Vecer se plaze na Phi-Phi promeni v totalni parirny, z pisku vyrostou tanecni parkety a snad ve vsech barech maji ohnovou show. Nas oblibeny parici bar byl Apache Bar na plazi Ao Lo Dalam. Nejoblibenejsim drinkem je tu kyblicek, ktery se sklada z michaneho napoje (asi 1/2 litru) podle konzumentova vyberu (kyblicky se prodavaji take ve vesnici, ale nejsou jeste namichane, skladaji se z miniflasticky koralky a PET lahve s necim na zredeni). Spousta paricu turistu se predhani v tom, kdo vypije vic kyblicku, takze kolem pulnoci uz maj vsichni nalezite nahoukano a hormony se bouri. :-) My jsme se zradnych kyblicku radeji vyvarovali, prece jenom uz mame svoje zkusenosti a chteli jsme byt druhy den funkcni, takze jsme se "omezili" na pivo a vino. Moudre rozhodnuti. :-)
