Chicago toNorth Jackson(Ohio)

Today it was time to get my well relaxed body back onto my little Honda and start making my way towards New York. This morning before I departed I had a bit of a re-pack of the bike. My big green hold-all which has been with me the whole trip was getting rather tatty and was certainly not suitable to be taken on a plane was skipped and a new small suitcase which can be taken as hand luggage on the flight was now in its place.

Getting everything re-packed was just madness. I seemed to have much more stuff now than ever before and I just could not get it all in and so I had to leave a few things behind at Lettas.

Finally at about 08h45 I left and headed down through Romeoville towards interstate 80 which virtually runs all the way to NY.

As it was still quite early traffic was busy and I kept saying to myself "we will soon be on the highway and moving much faster". Again I was totally wrong and as I turned onto interstate 80 the traffic was at a complete standstill!!! As any normal biker would do I pushed my way through the traffic and finally got moving after about 10 miles. It was roadwork's as usual and only one lane was open. Finally its all back to normal and I'm soon flying along at 75mph.

One thing I find here in US is that going at the speed limit is totally pointless. If you are good and sit at the speed limit you will just about be pushed off the road by all the other cars and trucks wanting passed. Best thing is to simply just keep up with the traffic ahead which most of the time is doing about 80mph.

The day started nice and warm and so I decided to ride gloveless but as I head further into Indiana the weather takes a turn for the worst. Up ahead is massive grey thunder clouds and I soon pull over and put on my waterproofs before it starts. It gets darker and darker with thunder and lightning all around. The wind is going mad and I'm getting blown all over the place. Soon it begins to pour but within 5 minutes its stopped and that was the end of the rain. Another 50 miles on and its bright burning sunshine once again and I pull into some services and take off my waterproofs. Its then into the cafe and time for a burger and massive chocolate milkshake.

After the break its back onto the highway and up to yet another toll booth where I have to pay for my journey across Indiana. Another few miles down the road and I'm now into Ohio where there is another toll booth but this is only to take the ticket which I then give back when I leave the toll road. Seeing this long toll road on a map had me looking at other routes. After the cost of toll's in Mexico I never want to travel on a toll road ever again. However the cost today was nothing compared to the $300 we paid in Mexico and was a pleasant $18 for the whole 300 miles or so.

The traffic was going well on the highway all the way until we got near to Toledo. Here it was cars and trucks as far as the eye could see and finally after about a hour going along at walking speed it all came to a complete standstill. I as usual weaved my way through a number of vehicles and got a few hoots from drivers in jealousy that I was moving and they were not.

Once at a stand people were soon out stretching their legs and chatting. The sun was beating down and I was just boiling. I was so tempted just to ride up the hard shoulder but somehow thought I would be in trouble with the law. It was just terrible standing here. Even the opposite road was closed as not a single vehicle had passed on it for the last hour or so.

Finally I asked one of the motorists what was going on and he replied "its the President". Well low and behold, we might have guessed, all this for politics again!! Apparently the President was in the area and all roads had to be closed while he was in the area.

Finally it was all on the move again but by now everyone was dying of heat exhaustion and it would appear they all headed for the first available services on the road as they were just packed full of people wanting cold drinks.

From then the journey was great and I just sat in the right lane taking my time. I decided to turn off the beaten track of interstate 80 and head along route 14 in search for a hotel for the night. I headed into the town of Streetsboro where there were loads of the usual hotels such as Holiday Inn etc but I wanted something different and perhaps something with a nice view into the countryside. However this was not to be and after Streetsboro there was not another hotel to be found all the way along route 14. Soon its back onto the highway until I see signs for accommodation at one of the off ramps and so its off there I go. I'm into the small town of North Jackson and book myself into a small motel at the side of the road.

This little town sure seems to be a catchment area for noisy Harley Davidson bikes as there seems to be loads of them barking their way up and down the street and making one hell of a noise. One thing I did notice is that next to non of them were wearing helmets or bike jackets.

Seeing these guys without helmets made me want to try it once and for all. all my life that I have ridden bikes I have always been forced to wear a helmet.

Out to my bike I go and put the key into the slot and go to start the engine. I look around and start looking for my helmet!!! Silly bugger I think but I'm just so use to putting it on whenever I board any motorcycle.

I head off along the road and begin to realize just how cold it is out here and how much protection that helmet really gives you. I started out feeling warm and was going to get some food and a ice cold coke but by the time I reach the town all I want is a nice hot cup of Hot Chocolate as I'm now freezing!!

With a box of chicken wings its back to the motel and the cool aircon is now switched from cool to heat as I'm bloody freezing. The sun has gone down and it is incredible just how cold it has become.

With the wings down my throat and a chat on the phone to Letta its time to get some rest. One thing I have just discovered is that we lost yet another hour today as I crossed between Indiana and Ohio!! A right pain in the butt!! Another hour less sleep;-)

And that concludes my day today.
