Show trip route
Las Vegas to Nephi, Utah (US)
Today was to be my last day with any of the riders from the group. John, who was my room mate in Vegas left at about 6am and went off with Pear & Ebba and a few others.
I loaded up my little Honda and got it down to a motorcycle shop in Vegas where they changed the oil
The shop I took it to was brilliant and even gave it a good clean and polish. The beast looks brand new again and has never looked so good since she arrived in Ushuaia at the beginning. They even replaced a small missing screw in the faring and gave me a bottle of chain oil for my oiler at no cost to myself.
By the time I got on my way it was 11h00 and soon I was racing along interstate 15 at 80mph. This is the highway to Salt Lake city which is over 300 miles away.
It was a boiling day and so I was as usual travelling with only a T-shirt on but as like many folk on this planet I just never learn!! Just like a few days ago there was loads of large hornets flying around and for sure one was going to get me. Smash, right into my arm this damm thing went and somehow managed to get down my shirt and sting me. I stopped and pulled the large sting out myself
I know this road is a highway but there was some great scenic sections of it where it had been built through the mountains. It followed a river cutting with massive rock formations all around and me as usual just could not resist stopping to take a few photos.
Paul said I must not use the highway but instead use route 89 which is much more scenic. However by the time I got to the junction where I would turn off for that route the weather had changed and there was a massive storm right over in the East where that road was andso I decided to continue on interstate 15.
It was quite warm with the jacket on but as we climbed higher into the mountains it began to cool down by the mile. Soon the jacket was zipped up to my neck, then the heated grips went on and not long after that my gloves went on. We were just over 6500ft high and the difference in temp was amazing. Soon a massive storm came over and I could see it was snowing up ahead. It started to rain and so I stopped and put on my wonderful heavy duty rain suit. This sure kept the rain off but certainly never kept the cold out
As I raced on up interstate 15 towards Salt Lake City it started to rain and then it began to snow and my body temp just dropped and I was freezing. My jacket and trousers had no liners in them so were not up to keeping the cold out and by the time I reached the small town of Nephi I was like a lump of ice. I made the decision that I could go no further and turned off the highway. I then headed into the town and booked into a lovely Motel. The first thing I did was make a cup of coffee in the room. This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in the whole trip with tea/coffee in the room and also a fridge.......who needs that in this weather??
I turned the heating on and went and unloaded my bike. When I came back the room was boiling. Just then another biker from California arrived and we got chatting. we then went over the road to a wonderful restaurant and had some kind of curry dish for dinner.
The chaps name is Kevin and he is doing a trip across the USA to see his brother. Tomorrow he is going to visit Green River and Flaming gorge and suggested I go with him and so we will take the scenic route tomorrow.
