On Wednesday we met up with a couple of people from 'free your stuff berlin' and gave them shoes, photo frames, a bag and glasses, it's great that people can find uses for the things we cannot keep.
On Thursday as Paul packed his bag again, I made a cake for Charly. It's her birthday today and seeings we are seeing her tomorrow in Czech, I thought I would make her a cake. It is quite difficult to find self raising flour or baking powder here in Germany. I did however find natron which I think is the equivalent to bicarb soda. So I looked up a recipe with it and vinegar instead of baking powder and decided to experiment first with a simpler cake recipe. It turned out fine so I used the mix for the birthday cake. It was a bit of an experiment cake as we had a few things that we needed to use like chocolate powder, dates and the German equivalent to golden syrup. So I made a caramel chocolate date cake with a few mars bar type things inside. It took a really long time to cook and I was convinced that I had wrecked the cake as it sunk in the middle. I was about to start making my third cake for the day when Paul stopped me and suggested we wait a couple of hours and see if it solidifies a bit. He also said that the best cakes are those which sink in the middle, haha ok thanks for that Paul!
I then made some museli bars for the trip tomorrow. We had heaps of oats, honey and all those dates, so we rolled them up, baked them for about half an hour and bam delicious museli slice things.
By the time it was time to leave for Marc's place, the cake was looking a bit better. So we made some caramel icing for the top, put it in a pot and carried it to Marc's place along with my bike, some clothes and our skiing stuff.
We arrived at about 6:30pm, watched some ice hockey on tv, chatted and were gifted with a delicious dinner cooked by marc. It was spaghetti with a creamy onion and tomato sauce. Paul loved it and ate so much that he felt sick afterwards.
It wasn't until 1230 that we finally went to bed. A bit silly of us as we were to get up at 4am and drive 500kms to Czech. Goodnight..
