With only three nights in the Zaanstreek region, our program was jam-packed. We started off with a quick lunch at the Rotary Club of Zaandam Oost in the area of Zaanse Schans.

The Zaanse Schans is an historic village featuring the classic green houses typical of this area. Whilst also a haven for busloads of Japanese (and other) tourists, it also is home to five active windmills along the Zaan River.

We stopped at the Mustard Windmill and also at last saw how they make the traditional Dutch wooden shoes (or 'klompen'). It was great to finally see this.

In addition, this afternoon we had a tour of the Jisperveld, a watery grassland which is home to a wide range of native birdlife. We travelled around on a silent boat, resting in the sunshine. It was quite different birdlife to that which the boys had seen in Amsterdam.
