Susanna Terstal from the Rotary Club of Heemstede is the host of Vince, and also works with the Department of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands. She commutes daily to Den Haag (The Hague in English) and this morning we travelled with her for a visit to Holland's political capital and international centre. We started with a tour of the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice and also the International Court of Arbitration. The Peace Palace was built from 1899 with a bequest from American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It features spectacular gifts from many member nations, including oak panelling from the US, tapestries from Japan, a statue from Argentina and Chile, paintings from France, and stained glass from the UK.
From the Palace, we had a guided walk around the streets of the Hague, waving to the Queen at one of her palaces, checking out the many statues, and wandering past the government buildings. Finishing off with a meal of pancakes and poffertjes, we slept in the car on the way back to Heemstede and Hoofdorp.
