This morning we drove an hour and a half north to the northern tip of North Holland, Den Helder. Here we visited the National Rescue Museum (Reddingsmuseum). The new museum highlighted the history of sea rescue in Holland. For Marnie in particular, it was an interesting comparison to life saving in Australia. Members of the Rotary Club of Bleomendaal were hosting us all day today.
We examined some of the old techniques used to bring rescued victims back to consciousness. One was tossing the person over a barrel. Another involved a tobacco enema. Fortunately for us all, Holland and the rest of the world have moved on since then.
Outside the museum stood a replica boat from the heyday of Dutch sailing. It was a magnificent vessel, reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean!

We had a short trip on the water in an old life saving boat. Walter steered us in circles for a short while before getting us back to shore.
