Simple Travelling Recipe - YMCA Shimla Bruschetta
Entry 33 of 235 | show all | print this entry |
Take two traveller's, simple folk looking for simple fresh tasting food, non-Indian, maybe a hint of Italian food at that.... here's some I prepared earlier.
YMCA Shimla Bruschetta
Ingredients: Olive Oil - a rare commodity in India. Usually the words "Edible Oil" are used. It could be Yak Oil, so its best to find a small tin of genuine Spanish or Italian extra virgin. 150 Rupees. Tomatoes, Cucumber, Capsicums ("Peppers are hot you silly American, these aren't, so they are Capsicums"), Onions, Lemon and Garlic. 15 Rupees. Herbed Roti Bread. 15 Rupees Toasted Bread Cut Into Cubes. 10 Rupees. 2 x 1 Litre of Pure Drinking Water. 10 Rupees x 2 1 x Paring Knife. 10 Rupees 1 x Swiss Army Knife. Ten years ago, Mitchells Disposals. Salt and Pepper to taste, thanks to the Shimla YMCA. 1 x Toilet Paper Roll. 'Kitchen Paper' as Mum would say. 1 x Bottle of Chattali Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Straight from the famous region of Maharastra, India. Actually its not that famous for wine, but someone whacked in a few French vines a while back and they squash them and ferment it, and call it wine. 900 Rupees.
Method: Wash fresh ingredients with Pure Drinking Water.
Use knife to cut the bottom out of Pure Drinking Water bottles. These will become your 'mixing bowls' for the dressing.
Use knife to cut pieces from the remaining parts of Pure Drinking Water bottles. These will become your chopping boards for the fresh ingredients.
Crush and chop garlic roughly. Large chunks as its delicious and no one wants to kiss any of the locals anyway. Add to the 'mixing bowl'.
Chop onion. Add to garlic. Actually the locals probably won't notice as their own breath isn't exactly minty sweet, and that is from a distance.
Squeeze Lemon into 'mixing bowl'. Add salt and pepper. Stir with swiss army knife. Wallah, dressing!
Look confused to how to open wine without a bottle opener. Look at swiss army knife and curse the fact that you didn't get one with a bottle opener in it. Use knife to attempt to remove cork. Accidentally push cork into the bottle. Wipe splashed wine from your face and pants. Thank the winemaker for making a watery red with no body that will probably come out of your pants with a good scrub.
Pour wine into glasses. Chink glasses. Drink a sip. Whince as if you've sucked on the lemon, as the red is rough around the edges. Drink a sip more. Hmmm better. Drink a sip more. This is alright.
Chop and dice tomotoes ("tomaytoes, tomartoes, lets call the whole thing off"), cucumbers, capsicums, ok peppers as well. Chop carefully as the chopping board is curved because it was a plastic bottle remember. Sip wine. Hmmm this is good schtuff really.
Sip more wine. You're getting hungry and haven't eaten for a while. Well what do you know, 12.5% alcohol, and itsch yummy schtuff for lolly water.
Open herbed bread pockets. Add fresh chopped ingredients. Add dressing. Wipe spilled dressing from table and floor with Toilet Paper. No one will notice as its where you spilled the wine earlier, and that was on the red part of the carpet. Eat. Sip more wine. Thisch ish eggschellent.
Remove Toasted Bread Cubes. Add dressing. Oh its good. Add fresh chopped ingredients. Oh this isch delischious I should have more wine really though.
Cost excluding wine and olive oil - 70 Rupees ("2 Bucks, excellent!") Cost excluding wine, including olive oil - 220 Rupees ("still under AUD$7, the oil brings out the flavours") Cost including wine and olive oil - 1,120 Rupees ("good god thats expensive, that's like $33... oh well you only live once, and the wine brings out the flavours")
Serves two.
