Melbourne Next day was Xmas eve, so that meant Australia here we come!! Arrived in Melbourne at 8.30pm, & were met at the airport by my brother Jez who was Down Under for the cricket & my good mate Tucker, who emigrated from Kent 3yrs ago (very sensible lad!). Me, Flash & Jez all stayed at Chez Tucker for the 6 days whilst in Melbourne over Xmas.
On the way from the Airport, we ducked into St Kilda, a city beachside suburb, famous for cakes, prostitutes & Shane Warne (in that order!) to meet my little sister Angharad, who, also by a matter of coincidence happened to be in Melbourne for Xmas too! She is on a 1 year round the world tour, from South America to Australia to Asia with her lovely chums Katie, Laura, Anna & Helen. Had a lovely family type Xmas day at Tuckers, no roast turkey here, fresh fish & chops on the barbie, although admittedly the weather wasn't perfect - it only just crept up to 20c on Xmas day with clouds & the odd drizzle. Typical, brought the weather with us! Angharad & the girls joined us, with Tucker, his wifey Sam, & the 2 kids, my God-daughter Megan & her li'l sister Hannah.
It was my 3rd time in Melbourne, so there wasn't any "touristy" things i wanted to do, so the main high (or is that low) light was the cricket - The Ashes - England v Australia - the Boxing day test - the biggest cricket match at the Biggest cricket ground in the world - the MCG, Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Shame England were crap though - at least we had an absolute bawl at the game, in with the Barmy Army for a sing-song, the Aussies don't know what to make of it, with a huge array of funny/insulting chants aimed at them! Brilliant time had though - even the girls came along & enjoyed it too! Me & Flash also actually WON some money at the Casino (was the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere). We played Roulette, started with A$50 float, & played for over 3 hours, quite shrewdly it has to be said, & ended up with A$200 profit! Not a huge amount i know, but not bad for 3 hours entertainment - and the 1st time i've walked out of a casino in profit!
So, after several barbies, watching a couple of days of "Tonk-a-pom" (cricket) & some great time catching up with Tucker & the family, me, Flash, Jez & all 5 girls all headed for Sydney, it was a shame to leave Melbourne - a city i have a lot of affection for, but i'm certain i'll be back again very soon!
